Chapter Twelve

Lexy had just finished lining up the éclairs in a perfect row right next to the half-moon cookies in the bakery case at The Cup and Cake when she saw a flash of blue outside in the street. It was Nans and the ladies in Ruth’s decades-old Oldsmobile. Pedestrians scattered as the car narrowly missed a fire hydrant while pulling up to the curb. She could barely see the top of Ruth’s head sticking up from behind the wheel, her hands clutched at the ten o’clock and two o’clock positions. The big boat of a car was far too huge for Ruth to drive, but it held sentimental value, so she wouldn’t give it up easily.

The ladies filed out of the car and marched inside, immediately crowding in front of the bakery case to pick out pastries, two for each. Well, except Helen, who was apparently sticking to her low-carb diet. Even Ida’s persistence did not sway her resolve.

Lexy rang them up, and they settled in at one of the cafe tables at the window with steaming mugs of coffee in front of them. The bakery wasn’t crowded at this time of day, so Lexy grabbed a cream horn and joined them, taking a small bite from the end of the horn that was mostly flaky pastry and just a bit of cream. She liked to eat the ends first and save the cream-stuffed middle for last.

Downtown Brook Ridge Falls was a quaint New England town with old brick mill buildings lining the river. The large front windows of The Cup and Cake looked out over the waterfall. Lexy could practically hear the water whooshing past as she watched it cascade over the rocks that made up the falls. Neat planters filled with blooming wildflowers in every shade dotted the sidewalks, and new wrought-iron street signs had been installed by the town to continue the picturesque feel.

The sound of a clasp snapping open drew Lexy’s attention back inside, and she glanced over to see Helen rummaging through her huge handbag again. She half expected her to pull out more piecrust, but instead, she removed another tiny single-serving container of cottage cheese and a plastic spoon.

While the other ladies set about eating the luscious pastries set before them neatly on napkins, Helen ate her cottage cheese, making an elaborate show of moaning in delight as she licked the spoon and exclaimed how tasty it was. Lexy liked healthy food as much as the next person, but there was no way Helen’s snack compared to the freshly made cupcakes, Danish, and scones.

Ida rolled her eyes and grinned at Lexy, obviously agreeing.

Helen saw their exchanged looks and was not amused. She arched a brow at Lexy before turning to Ida beside her and scowling. “My breakfast is only one hundred fifty calories. How much fat and sugar are in that scone of yours, Ida?”

“Who cares?” Ida said around another mouthful of butterscotch chip scone, the crystalized sugar and caramel topping coating her lips.
